February 5 - STEVEN NEWTON- The National Center for Science Education - "Creationism versus Evolution - The meaning to our schools and society"

There is a concerted effort by some evangelical churches to ban the teaching of science - especially evolution- from the schools and replace critical thinking with creationism. For over thirty years the effort has been to replace science with the concept of "Intelligent Design". This concept purports that the earth is only 5,000 years old, and that man lived alongside the dinosaurs. At a time when India and China, among other countries, are turning out critical thinkers with heavy science and mathematics backgrounds, many of those running the school book programs and curriculums want to de-emphasize science and facts and replace them with Intelligent Design.

The National Center for Science Education is the only national organization that is wholly dedicated to defending the teaching of evolution in the public schools. Steven Newton will bring us up to date on the issues relevant to evolution versus creationism. Steve joined NCSE as a Public Information Project Director in 2008. He received his BA from UC Berkeley and then completed his M.S. from CSU Hayward. He has developed courses in the History of Science and the Geology of the National Parks.
